178 CHAPTER 10: LEGACY OPTIONS
Legacy Host
Options
All legacy host ports have a similar set of parameters for their stations. Most
options appear for Unisys Poll/Select stations. The following pages describe how
these options are used in real network situations and include diagrams and NMCS
screens referring to specific configuration requirements.
A - Timeout For
Offline Device
Normally, a MultiPro unit acknowledges a poll for a device whether the device is
on-line or not. This saves polling time since the host does not have to timeout each
time a poll goes unanswered. Sometimes it is desirable, though, to let the host
know that a device is off-line. This is especially true with automated teller
machines (ATMs). Usually an off-line ATM does not respond to polls and the host
generates a trouble message for an operator to take action on the situation.
Anytime this option is set, the MultiPro unit does not respond to a poll or select if
the specific device has no connection to the host port. In this way we can simulate
the action of the network as if the device was directly attached to the host. It
should be noted that this still works even if there is an intervening public network
(such as X.25 or frame relay) between the host site and remote site.
